VIKING receives business award in Denmark The region of Esbjerg has presented the 2009 Esbjerg Business Award to VIKING. At the New Year prize-giving event, the chairman of the committee apologized for not having made the award somewhat earlier.
The annual New Year’s event for the business community in VIKING’s region saw VIKING receive the 2009 Esbjerg Business Award. The award is presented to those who through impressive results, have made a special contribution to the development of the municipality of Esbjerg.
At the same time, the award’s recipient must reflect a specific set of values: energy and creative drive; sustained, targeted effort; and international focus.
Before asking VIKING CEO Kjeld Amann to come up on stage, John Lesbo, chairman of the Esbjerg Business Development Center, admitted that the award had been long overdue.
In the chairman’s words: “Dear Kjeld, this award is well deserved. In fact, we’re a little embarrassed that VIKING hasn’t previously been recognized locally in this way, when both internationally and nationally, there have been plenty of accolades!”
He then went on to recount parts of the VIKING story, which began 50 years ago. “The company’s beginnings and many of its initial years were characterized by unique personalities. Sound values such as honesty, credibility, caring and responsibility to customers have always been part of the company’s core. This millennium has seen impressive results, including a tripling of revenues and strong growth in the number of global locations. Profitability has increased and the company’s worldwide staff continues to grow. At the same time, the company has created new markets, products and services.”
In its choice, the award committee had been faced with choosing among a number of interesting companies, but reached unanimous agreement on VIKING as the winner.
